Alpes d’Huez – Scandinavian-Inspired Furnishing in the Alps

residential

Brief

Luxoria Interiors was invited to complete the interior decoration of a four-bedroom, three-bathroom chalet in Alpe d’Huez, French Alps. The scope focused purely on styling: furniture, lighting, textiles, art, and accessories—without altering structure or kitchen layout.

Tucked into a bright clearing in the French Alps, this four-bedroom, four-bath chalet needed only one final layer of polish: the interiors. Luxoria Interiors was brought on board to furnish and style every space, creating a warm, relaxed atmosphere that complements the building’s generous volumes and natural setting.

A Cohesive Material Palette

From the moment you step inside, the focus is on honest, tactile materials. Exposed spruce beams and pale oak floors carry your eye from room to room, while accents of grey limestone—used sparingly on feature walls—nod to the rugged landscape outside. Throughout the home, we introduced a restrained palette of soft whites, gentle greys and muted greens, then punctuated it with richer tones—deep forest hues in the living area and the signature orange of a smooth-upholstered sofa.

Living Room: Comfort in Contrast

The living room centres on a cylindrical wood-burning stove finished in matte black. Its clean lines contrast with the pale timbers above, while the flicker of firelight animates the simple plaster walls. We paired the stove with a streamlined sofa in a vibrant orange fabric—no boucle here—choosing a smooth weave that’s easy to maintain yet striking against the neutral backdrop. A low coffee table in dark ash sits nearby, flanked by a pair of lounge chairs dressed in soft sheepskin throws. Overhead, an antler-inspired light fitting casts a warm, even glow, referencing alpine character without feeling cliché.

Dining Area: Understated Elegance

Adjacent to the living space, a sleek black dining table invites communal meals. We specified slender-legged Scandinavian chairs, each outfitted with a choice of dark-brown or ivory fur cushions to add texture and seasonal cosiness. Beneath, a sculptural rug in a subtle linear pattern unifies the area and softens footsteps on the oak boards.

Bedrooms: Tailored Tranquillity

Each of the four bedrooms has its own ensuite, but it was the decorating and soft furnishings that defined their characters. In the master, we introduced velvet-upholstered cushions in moss green to pick up on the pines outside, and layered woollen rugs beside the bed for a warm landing first thing in the morning. Crisp white linens and simple oak bedside tables keep the scheme restful, while a hand-woven throw adds an artisanal touch.

The guest rooms follow the same principle: pared-back furniture, quality linens in dove grey and linen, and a carefully chosen accent—be it a textured cushion, a knitted throw or a sculptural lamp. Our aim was to create spaces that feel both calm and gently curated, so guests wake up ready for fresh mountain air rather than sensory overload.

Balcony Touches & Decorative Details

The chalet’s outdoor areas were styled to reflect the same thoughtful attention to comfort and usability:

  • On the kitchen-side terrace, we placed a table with four chairs—ideal for morning coffee or light lunches when the sun warms the slope-facing side of the house.
  • The main terrace, accessible from both the living room and master bedroom, is arranged for laid-back lounging with three armchairs and two low side tables. The pieces are designed to withstand the elements, but we added textured cushions and throws for extra comfort during cooler months.
  • On the guest bedroom balcony, we opted for a simple wooden bench—a perfect perch to take in the crisp alpine air.

None of these areas is overly styled; instead, they’re built around usability and moments of quiet relaxation.

The Finishing Touches

Our work centred on textiles, lighting, artwork and furniture—no structural changes, no built-in kitchen cabinet work, no home-automation. Yet these finishing touches transform a solid alpine shell into a lived-in retreat. We commissioned local artisans for hand-woven rugs and selected Scandinavian lighting designs that feel both familiar and fresh. Decorative cushions, throws and carefully curated objects give every shelf and sideboard a quiet point of interest without cluttering the eye.

By keeping our interventions entirely within the realm of decoration and furnishing, Luxoria Interiors was able to add warmth and personality without over-promising or overstating. The result is a chalet that feels authentic to its alpine setting yet subtly layered with Scandinavian calm: bright by day, snug by night, and always inviting.
